AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING BY REFERENCE, CERTAIN PARTS OF THE 1975 EDITION OF THE
SOUTHERN STA~JDARD MECHANICAL CODE, WHICH IS A CODE GOVERNING THE SAFE INSTALLATION
OF ALL MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS OF WEST MEMPHIS, ARKANSAS
AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WEST MEMPHIS, ARKANSAS:
SECTION I. That all of the "Southern Standard Mechanical Code," 1975
Edition is hereby adopted by reference, except portions known as Section 101
"Title and Scope" which is amended to read: (Section 101.3). The provisions of
this code shall apply to the installation of mechanical systems, including alterations,
fixtures, fittings and/or appurtenances thereto, including ventilating, heating,
cooling, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, incinerators, and other
energy related system; and Section 102 "Organization" which is amended to read:
(Section 102.1). There is hereby established within the Inspection and Permit
Department, a sub-department to be called the Mechanical Inspection Department,
which will be in charge of the official so legally designated by the local governing
body. (Section 102.2). No person shall be appointed as inspector of mechanical
systems who has not had at least five (5) years experience as a Plumbing or Mechanical
Inspector, or as a Superintendent, Foreman, or competent mechanic in charge of
mechanical construction; and Section 104 "Application for Permit" which is amended
to read: (Section 104.3) Add: or Licensed Mechanical Contractor; and Section 106
"Schedule of Permit Fees" which is amended to ,read: (Section 106.3) (1) For issuing

each permit $7:~s~ (2) Fee for heating, ventilating, duct, air conditioning and
refrigeration installation shall be ten (10) dollars for first thousand valuation
plus two (2) dollars each additional thousand or fraction thereof. (3) Additions
or alterations to an existing system where cost is over $500.00, the fee shall be
five (5) dollars for the first .$1,000.00 or fraction thereof plus two (2) dollars
for each additional $1,000.00 or fraction thereof; and Section 509 "Fire Protection
of Ducts" which is amended to read: (Section 509.5) Fire Damper Exceptions: Add
(E) Not required in single family residence.
SECTION 2. No provision of this Ordinance is intended to repeal any provision
of the Fire Prevention Code or the Southern Standard Building Code of the City of
West Memphis, Arkansas, and shall be construed to be in addition to the standards
required in said codes.
SECTION 3. It being found and determined by the City Council of the City of
West Memphis, Arkansas that this Ordinance is necessary to insure the safe inst-
allation of mechanical devices within the City of West Memphis, Arkansas and being
further necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health, safety, and

welfare of the citizens of the City of West Memphis, Arkansas and this Ordinance
shall be in full force and effect from and after the date of its passage.
