Subject: Water Well 5
Good morning,
Layne recently sent a pump crew to remove the vertical turbine pump from Well 5 due to excessive vibration of the
pump. The crew found the column pipe had come apart. They attempted to pull the pump by the oil tubing; however,
the pump fell into the well. We were able to remove the 150 horsepower motor, pump head, 120 feet of 10" column
pipe and 60 feet of oil tube and shaft assembly. The parts which are still in the well are the suction pipe, pump bowl, 60
feet of 10" column pipe and 120 feet of oil tube and shaft assembly.
We suspect these parts are now resting on the top of the 10 inch inner well casing which our records indicate starts at a
depth of 1352 feet.
There are two approaches to consider. The first is to simply rebuild/replace the pump and install it in the well with the
hope the old parts will not impede the flow of water coming from the well. We have attached an estimated cost for this
approach. The downside of this attempt is we would not know if the well will still produce water until we have installed
the pump and test pumped the well.
The second approach is to attempt to fish out the parts. The estimated depth of the parts, around 1300 feet, make this
a costly endeavor with no guarantee of success. Special tools are needed for this type of operation and multiple
attempts may be necessary. An estimated cost for trying to remove the parts is shown at the bottom of the
attached. This type of work is performed on a time and materials basis under the terms and conditions of Layne's
Confirming Order. There is some possibility some of the parts could be reconditioned and reused in rebuilding the
pump.
