Include connectivity to existing or future infrastructure. (3000 character limit) The purpose of this project is to improve walkability and access to two local public schools: Bragg Elementary and Jackson Wonder Elementary. Broadway (tied in to the existing sidewalk), as well as new sidewalks on both sides of Gibson Ave from Redding Dr. N. to Roosevelt Ave (tied in to the proposed Redding Dr. sidewalk and the existing sidewalks on Roosevelt Ave). Broadway (tied to existing sidewalk on Broadway)to Jackson Ave. New sidewalks will be added to the north side of SL Henry St. from S 25th St. to Walker Ave. In all areas mentioned above, The City of West Memphis proposes to create 6-foot wide sidewalks with ADA-compliant Type 1 or Type 3 curb cuts/ramps at all intersections, and to remove obstructions from existing sidewalks. Two new schools are planned for these areas: West Junior High (currently under construction) shares a site with Bragg Elementary and will also benefit from improvements to Redding Dr. and Roosevelt Ave; Wonder Middle School (planned construction in 2022) will be sited at the southeast corner of E. Broadway and S. 25th St and will benefit from improvements to S. 25th St. Improvements made to S. 25th St. will tie in to proposed walkability improvements along Polk Ave (currently under review as a State Aid project). Walkable West Memphis Project Benefits How does this project provide an overall benefit to the community(ies)? What use groups will be positively affected? If this project will provide safe routes to school for children, include which schools will benefit. (3000 character limit) This Safe Routes to School project will benefit students at Bragg Elementary, West Jr. High, Jackson Wonder Elementary, and Wonder Jr. High by improving walkability in adjacent neighborhoods. West Memphis sits on gumbo—an unstable soil prone to swelling and shrinking. Existing sidewalks in town were not designed with this in mind, and many local sidewalks are failing. Rebuilding these sidewalks to a higher standard will improve walkability and accessibility, especially for the mobility challenged residents of our community. Bragg Elementary and West Jr High are adjacent to the Tenmile Bayou Trail ijob #110731). Expanding the sidewalk network in this area will help to leverage the investment the City has made on this trail; increasing safe school access will enhance the trail's desirability and improve connectivity. Jackson Wonder Elementary and Wonder Jr. High are in an economically disadvantaged part of town. Car ownership in the area is low, so improving walkable access to these schools is vital for the surrounding community. Page 9 of 13 Sponsor: City of West Memphis,Arkansas Project Name: Walkable West Memphis Project Background Please describe any planning or public input processes used in development of this project. If the proposed project is in an existing bicycle/pedestrian plan, street plan, master plan or other long range plan, please identify this as well. (2500 character limit) The school board approached the City of West Memphis requesting improvements for active transportation in the area. The West Memphis School District has invested in three new schools in the past five years and requested that the city expand new sidewalks tying into those installed by the school district.
