Now comes the City of uaest I':Temphis, Ki~kansas, a duly incorporated city urv_ler and by
reason of the lams of the State of Arkansas and respectfull;,* asks leave to intervene i.n the
foregoing proceeding, and fer cause tY.ereof' respectfully showNS tc the Co:.unission as follows:
That the City of West P,emphis_, Arkansas, lies immediately across the I:'Iississippi "river
from Ellemphis, Tennessee. That U. S. lli~;hvray 70 is maintained betvreen 1!!iemphis, Tennessee, and
'Jdest P~Iemphis, Arkansas, and that the said U. S. hi`;hvray 70 constitutes the principal business
and industrial street in the City of luest T:Tcn!phis and is known as Broad~uay Avenue. I'lrat the
distance between the western city boundary of the City of west i.}e!;rphis and T~1emY:rhis, 'Pennessee,
is approxirnat~;ly ten miles, and that U. S. HFhr~ay 70 within the City of ~~est I:iemphis is heavi7~
traversed by both local traffic and by transcontinental traffic.
41'
II
That Dixie Greyhound Lines, Southeastern Greyhound Lines, Llissouri Pacific
Transportation Corarany, smerican Buslines, Inc., Arkansas Tulotor Coaches, ~+iernphis-
1Yest L~Iemphis Transit Comparr;y and ++est Memphis Transportation Comr,any all perform
motor bus tr •nsportation bettiveen the cities o#' }Memphis, Tennessee, and West Iv}emphis,
Arkansas.
III
That the officials and the City Council of tine City of ~+est P«ernphis, arkansas,
believing that Broadvra;,* Avenue (U. S. Hig}nvay 70) had become so heavily congested,
it was found necessary to cause to be passed certain c:ity ordinances vrhich sought to
regulate the use of the city street by the buses operating between Llemphis and
West }Memphis in an effort to relieve the traffic haz~,ards resulting from congested
use of said street. That, the City of West Llemphis, believes, that such congestion
has been largely contributed to by reason of the fact brat Y~est Memphis 'Pransportation
Compar>,y and the }•ieml:his-West Llemphis Transit Company both operate highly competitive
schedules with the same departure and arrival time at duest Liernphis, Arkansas.
The City of v+est &lemphis has been advised of the proposal of the yJest Llemphis
't'ransportation Conr;any to purchase t}re operations of the LIemphis-~~est Memphis Transit
Company and the purpose of this petition for leave to intervene on behalf of the city
is to support such alplication and to request the Conunission to rule favorablti7r upon
such application. The City of west T.Iemphis believes, upon the approval of sucYr
transaction and its conswrnnation, that a great deal of unnecessary bus operation will
be eliminated from the streets of the City of ~~est Memphis and that its principal
street will not be subjected to these undue hazzards but that, on the other hand, all
transportation between the two cities can be maintained and rendered by the succeeding
company, the tiVest Itlemp}wis 'Pransportation Compar{y.
Respectfully submitted,
Liar,=or, City o west T:iemphis
