FEDERAL HOUSING ADI~fIDIIS7?ZA.TION
October 12, 1955
Guaranty Loan & Real Estate ComFanY
301 East Broadway
West Memphis, Arkansas
Attention: Mr. Jack W. Rich
Gentlemen:
This will have reference to your letter of October 5, 1955 concerning acceptable
street width in your subdivision development in West Memphis.
The question of street width came up in January 1955 and wider date of January 15,
1955 we tarote to Mr. James M, Howell, City Engineer of West Memphis, and set forth
our views concerning street widths. These street widths which we recommend and
ordinarily use in setting up subdivisions are universal7.y accepted unless there are
reasons pertaining to a particular location which require variations.
It is our recommendation that 27- back to back of curb be the width used for minor
streets. We do not feel that any advantage accrues from increasing this width to
30 or 31- and it results in an increase in cost which could better be used in making
a better street at the lower width.
A_17. of our land planning contemplates the use of 27- width for minor streets.
It is our custom to accept city requirements for streets where they are equal or
exceed our requirements. Ilowever, we would much prefer that the 27- width be
used if it can be brought about for the reasons mentioned above and also because
greater widths tend to encourage greater speeds and increase pedestrian hazards.
If we can 1~ of any further assistance to you in this matter compatible with our
position a.nd authority, we will be happy to serve you.
Yours very truly,
Chas. R. Watson
Director
